Songs That Might Otherwise Pass You By, Part Two

Ane Brun, "The Treehouse Song"

I'm a little bit behind, I guess. This song is from last year. I really like it, though. I couldn't find a download that wouldn't win me a cease and desist letter, so I'm going to settle for the very fabulous video below.

**I'm going to try to post at least one more song today. It'll probably be later on.**

I really like the tag line on their website: "Don't fight the darkness; bring the light and the darkness will disappear".

Eh...Lola's crapping out again

**Note**

I am so sorry! I have not been on my game lately. I won't be posting another song tonight. I will try to post something during the week. Once again, I am so, so sorry. I've got that real-life stuff going on (as usual)...

Songs That Might Otherwise Pass You By, Part One

**Note** I'll probably just post one more song today, and it'll probably be later today. Jacksonville's first California Pizza Kitchen has opened, and I've never been to one of those, so priority calls! Heh heh.

Ugly Casanova, "Here's to Now" (MP3 courtesy of MPR's Current Song of the Day)

One of the first "independent" songs that really got me thinking about doing my own blog was Ugly Casanova's "Things I don't Remember" (Hey! Here's the original MP3 from their label site, Sub Pop!) I annoyed, aggravated, and borderline audibly assaulted many people with my insistent droning, er, singing to this song. Anyhoos...right around there I started thinking that this independent music thing was really going on. I'd listened to labels like 4AD and Nettwerk in the 90's, but back then we listened to music on "mixed tapes", and therefore it was all very personal, but didn't feel like a movement. Around that time in the early two thousands, though, I realized that something substantial was going on.

Ugly Casanova's Isaac Brock went back to doing music with some other band he was in--Modest Mouse or something. I started to poke around the music blogs more and more to see what was out there. Eight years later Ugly Casanova has released several new songs as part of a soundtrack to a movie called 180 South. The soundtrack is on Brushfire Records.

Kind of a Nick Cave vibe, if Nick Cave really wanted to break down and study why his music was so unnerving and haunting. Also the drummer looks like Jewel Staite, who played Kaylee on Firefly.

Songs That Might Otherwise Pass You By, Part Two

*Note: the way this MP3 is configured, it's not playable on the little insta-player on my website. You can either drag it on to a media player, click on it to have it play in its own window or listen to it streaming on her site or Toolshed's site, before you download it. It's still downloadable, it just doesn't play directly on my blog.

Kristen Hersh, "Rubidoux"
(MP3 courtesy of Toolshed Media Promotions. The entire album is available for streaming--click on the flower.)

Kristen Hersh never disappoints with her music. I can't say that with all the musicians I like--most of them have at least a few songs where I'm like "uh...wouldn't this be better as a B-side to a track that never exists?" But not with Kristen.

Website (I'm reading her blog, and it sounds like we have something in common--epilepsy. It doesn't seem appropriate to "Yay" that, so I'll just leave it at that.)
Facebook
Kristen also has demos for download on her Cash music page. She asks for a contribution if you can afford it (because even angels have to eat...yes, that was a dorky thing to say).

Wait...did Flo from those Progressive commercials used to be in Throwing Muses? No way!!!

Songs That Might Otherwise Pass You By, Part One

*Note* The rest of my blog posts will probably be delayed until tomorrow evening (Sunday). Hopefully I won't forget this time! I apologize for the flakiness, but the spectre of real-life challenge is looming in front of me.

Songs That Might Otherwise Pass You By, Part Two

Ten Bears, "Braces" (MP3 courtesy of KEXP Song of the Day podcast).

**Note** This is gonna be the last song for this weekend. See below explanation, and you might not want to disburb me for a little bit.

Website
Label site

OMG You wouldn't believe what I had to go through to get this for you. This is truly a testament to how much I like this song and how OCD I am. OMG.

When there's a song I want to use for my blog, I copy the URL into a notepad file. Ideally I'm supposed to type in the name of the song and band in so that I know who recorded it.

Well, I didn't type in anything except the URL, and unfortunately with KEXP's mp3s, they don't label the song in the URL. It just says http://www.digitalwell.washington.edu then a bunch of numbers and letters.

Well I've been looking at this URL in my notepad file every week and kicking myself because I didn't label it. Today I actually listened to the song, and I loved it so much that I spent 45 minutes trying to figure out what it was. first I Googled the lyrics. I tried "middle of 1980s", I tried "dancing in the streets to Bronski Beat". Couldn't find it. "Turn it back and push it down". Nope. "Spinning round, upside down". Nothing. So I took a different tack. I went through every song on Kexp's song of the day podcast and compared the file to the file name I had. May 20th, ladies and gents. That's where I found it. I have to go find my wits again now.

Sun Kil Moon

Sun Kil Moon came out of Red House Painters, one of my favorite 4AD bands. The primary songwriter/singer of Red House Painters, Mark Kozelek, started Sun Kil Moon several years ago. Sun Kil Moon have released a new album, and they are offering three songs for streaming.

Blog post will be postponed until tomorrow

*Note*

Yeah. I'm completely aware I forgot to finish my blog last weekend. I had intended to make up for it this weekend, but with the holiday, the weekend has gotten away from me.

I will post my blog tomorrow (Monday, July 5th). I'm sorry peeps!
