One of the first "independent" songs that really got me thinking about doing my own blog was Ugly Casanova's "Things I don't Remember" (Hey! Here's the original MP3 from their label site, Sub Pop!) I annoyed, aggravated, and borderline audibly assaulted many people with my insistent droning, er, singing to this song. Anyhoos...right around there I started thinking that this independent music thing was really going on. I'd listened to labels like 4AD and Nettwerk in the 90's, but back then we listened to music on "mixed tapes", and therefore it was all very personal, but didn't feel like a movement. Around that time in the early two thousands, though, I realized that something substantial was going on.
Ugly Casanova's Isaac Brock went back to doing music with some other band he was in--Modest Mouse or something. I started to poke around the music blogs more and more to see what was out there. Eight years later Ugly Casanova has released several new songs as part of a soundtrack to a movie called 180 South. The soundtrack is on Brushfire Records.
Kind of a Nick Cave vibe, if Nick Cave really wanted to break down and study why his music was so unnerving and haunting. Also the drummer looks like Jewel Staite, who played Kaylee on Firefly.

Kristen Hersh never disappoints with her music. I can't say that with all the musicians I like--most of them have at least a few songs where I'm like "uh...wouldn't this be better as a B-side to a track that never exists?" But not with Kristen.

OMG You wouldn't believe what I had to go through to get this for you. This is truly a testament to how much I like this song and how OCD I am. OMG.
When there's a song I want to use for my blog, I copy the URL into a notepad file. Ideally I'm supposed to type in the name of the song and band in so that I know who recorded it.
Well, I didn't type in anything except the URL, and unfortunately with KEXP's mp3s, they don't label the song in the URL. It just says http://www.digitalwell.washington.edu then a bunch of numbers and letters.
Well I've been looking at this URL in my notepad file every week and kicking myself because I didn't label it. Today I actually listened to the song, and I loved it so much that I spent 45 minutes trying to figure out what it was. first I Googled the lyrics. I tried "middle of 1980s", I tried "dancing in the streets to Bronski Beat". Couldn't find it. "Turn it back and push it down". Nope. "Spinning round, upside down". Nothing. So I took a different tack. I went through every song on Kexp's song of the day podcast and compared the file to the file name I had. May 20th, ladies and gents. That's where I found it. I have to go find my wits again now.
Sun Kil Moon came out of Red House Painters, one of my favorite 4AD bands. The primary songwriter/singer of Red House Painters, Mark Kozelek, started Sun Kil Moon several years ago. Sun Kil Moon have released a new album, and they are offering three songs for streaming.
Yeah. I'm completely aware I forgot to finish my blog last weekend. I had intended to make up for it this weekend, but with the holiday, the weekend has gotten away from me.
