Songs That Might Otherwise Pass You By
This is the last post of the weekend--though technically it's Monday. Whatever. I will be back this weekend with more posts. The podcast will be delayed, though. I will probably precord it this weekend. I'm considering not doing the podcast anymore. I'll still do the blog, of course. The podcast just isn't as much fun as it used to be. Let me know, though. If you like listening to the podcast, say something. I'll still keep posting, either way.

Haiti Relief Information
Haiti Relief
It's incredibly easy to give money to Haiti earthquake relief funds. You can text your donation, call it in or donate online. This isn't a comprehensive list--there are probably hundreds of sites out there offering support to Haiti. I'm at least familiar with the ones I'm listing, though, so I feel relatively comfortable citing them.
Unicef (International)
International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (International) (Also gives a way of donating by bank transfer)
OxFam (International). Scroll to the bottom of their page to donate.
Wyclef Jean is raising money through his Yele foundation. Click here to donate.
Salvation Army (United States) (Donate buttons are on the right)
Here is a list of cell phone numbers to text your contribution to:
(Please note: I'm not sure which of these work outside of the U.S. and which don't)
Haiti Text-To-Give Numbers,
Text HAITI to 25383 to donate $5 to International Rescue Committee
Text HAITI to 45678 to donate $5 to the Salvation Army in Canada
Text HAITI to 90999 to donate $10 to the American Red Cross
Text HAITI to 864833 to donate $5 to The United Way
Text CERF to 90999 to donate $5 to The United Nations Foundation
Text Yele to 501501 to donate $5. (Wyclef Jean's Organization
Text HAITI to 20222 to donate $10 through the Clinton Foundation
From what I've read, there's a delay to the texted funds being available to the relief effort. I also read that if you use your credit card, some credit cards are holding back as much as 3.5% for "transaction fees". Nice, huh? I wouldn't let any of that deter you, though. I know a lot of people don't have that much money, but if you think you can give even $5, I'm sure it would go a long way.
Many of these organizations will let you donate from their website, just keep in mind that you may need to specify that you want your funds to go to the earthquake fund. I donated on the American Red Cross website, and I had to specify the Haitian earthquake fund. You can also call the American Red Cross at 1-800-RED-CROSS
The Salvation Army (U.S.) accepts donations through telephone. The number is 1-800-SAL-ARMY. They also accept checks in the mail--enter your zip code on their website to get your local location.
Of course, the Haitians aren't the only people devasted right now. There are other emergency situations arising every day. There's only so much we can do, though. If you'd like to spread your donation out to other relief efforts, most of the websites I listed support other efforts. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies give a lot of information about their various relief efforts on their website. There have been a lot of earthquakes this month already--it's almost impossible to wrap my head around.

Update!
A band I put on my podcast (Episode 86) is offering their EP for free. The band is called EP Island, and I heard of them through one of their members, Down The Lees, whom I featured on my blog a year ago. ("Alone on a Thursday" is my favorite Down The Lees song).

Songs Part 2
This is a band I like a lot, and this is a great song.
I'll post the show notes for the podcast tomorrow night (even if I can't upload the podcast), and that will be the last post for this weekend.
I'll post the show notes for the podcast tomorrow night (even if I can't upload the podcast), and that will be the last post for this weekend.
Songs Part 1
I am utterly and completely spooked by the troubles I've been having with this blog lately. I'm especially disheartened because a lot of the songs I had picked out are from the Minnesota Public Radio podcast blog, and as I stated before, I'm almost certain the DMCA takedown notice was for a song that I was linking to from the Minnesota Public Radio website. If there was ever a more "on the up and up" source than MPR, I don't know what it would be.
Anyhoos, I'm going to go ahead and feature those songs, but I'm going to change the way I do this blog a little. I'm going to try to keep each blog post to one band, so that if I get another notice, there will be no doubt which song it's for. Also, I'm not going to direct link as much. I put the download links directly on my blog so that you can utilize the handy little player I have on my website. But, I'm thinking that makes me more vulnerable. So, unless a song is actually on the artist's website, label's website or a promotional company, then I won't direct link.
Anyhoos, that's the what now. Also, my podcasting service is experiencing difficulties, so I can't upload my podcast. Hopefully the service will be functioning tomorrow.

Band That Hopefully Won't Pass You By
Band That Hopefully Won't Pass You By
Balthrop, Alabama
I lived for ten years in the Iron State. Not a day passes that I don't think about. I miss it terribly. Will I ever go back? Well, I found out that Homebrewing is illegal there, so I probably won't ever live there again--I would love to visit again, though. I feel like I can visit the best parts of my former home any time, though. See, this gang, this gaggle of folks went and created an Alabamian home in Brooklyn, New York. While I'm not in Brooklyn, either (Hi Alice!), I can listen to this music whenever I want, and feel the exuberance, the passion and the community of a homegrown, Alabamy Jamboree.
I like a lot of different music, but this is the kind of music that I really count as my favorite. Just a mess 'o people singing and playing instruments. I love it.
You can stream a lot of their music at their label's site. I've had it playing for the last ten or fifteen minutes. They offer a few songs for download on their bio page (they're about halfway down). One of them, "Love to Love You", I featured on my blog a little over a year ago.
Some of Balthrop, Alabama's videos are featured here. Like all good boys and girls, they also have a Myspace and a Facebook.
One of the members, Michael Arthur, is also a very talented visual artist. Here is a very nice article by him in The New York Times, and he also writes his own blog. He also animated the video for "God Loves My Country".
