No Song Post This Weekend
It turns out I was wrong about which band I got the take down notice on last time. They don't actually feel the need to inform me of which song is in question, so through process of elimination, I figured out that it's actually a band I thought was pretty cool. The sucky thing is it was a band I really liked, and their labels' tag line says something about real artists doing music their own way. Well, I guess it is their own way, huh?
I took the song down and I wrote a very expressive letter to the band manager and the internet marketing manager about why I thought this was an unfair action on their part. I can understand if I had ripped the song to mp3 myself, but I didn't. I linked to the song from an affiliate of National Public Radio. Have I already said for crying out loud?

Songs That Might Otherwise Pass You By
NOTE: Well, I put the band "The Swell Season" on my blog because I thought they were swell. I got a DMCA take notice, so I won't listen to their music anymore. I even removed the mention of them from this post because I don't want to promote them at all. All of the songs in this post, including The Swell Seasons, were gotten directly from Minnesota Public Radio. The notice doesn't bother to tell me which song, so I had to remove them all, but I'm sure it was The Swell Season. When I got the DMCA take down notice before, The Swell Season was included in the post (another legitimately found link), but I thought it certainly couldn't be them, because their label's tagline is something like real artists who do music their own way. They seemed to really understand the model of legitimate online promotion. It has to be them, though--they're the only band that appeared in both posts.

Caitlin Rose (Live from Laundromatinee)
"Sinful Wishing Well" and "Shanghai Cigarettes"
(I posted a video of her live performance at the end of this post)
When I was growing up, the only country music I liked was the stuff my Uncle had in his record collection--Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Tanya Tucker, Hank Williams, Conway Twitty and Roy Orbison (that's what I can remember at this time, anyway). That style has remained the type of country music I like, and the newer artists whom I think capture that older style well are the country artists I like now. Sometimes I find some new gems who sing in old, old styles...

NOTE This post was edited on 12/14/2009. I got a take down notice, but I was not informed which song was the issue, so I took out all music links in this post. If you are not the perpetrator of the notice, please let me know and I'll put your song back. I'm very conscious of where I get my music from--I don't use a song if I don't believe it came from a sanctioned source. I use sites like AOL Spinner, KEXP Song of the Day and Daytrotter. To the best of my knowledge, the artists/label pursue these sites to put their music up. I simply link to those files.

Songs That Might Otherwise Pass You By
Alright, so I'm a little light on actual MP3s this week. Yesterday was my birthday, alright? Cut me some slack! I was busy at the zoo, commiserating with my fellow mammals. I also went to an excellent restaurant here in Jax called Orsay. It was awesome. If you're anywhere near hear, I highly recommend it. I got free ice cream 'cause it was my birthday, too :)
I will post zoo and birthday pictures on my Facebook later, and probably my Myspace.

Ever heard of Magnolia Electric Co? If you have, you've heard of the Molina part of this band. Ever heard of Centro-Matic? Then you're familiar with the second part of this duo. Yes, as most of you already know, I loves me some mountain men folk music.

Seriously, this is the only picture I could find of them. Appropriate, considering yesterday was Halloween, huh?
A bit of sadness. I only found out about the musician/songwriter Taylor Mitchell a few days ago, after I heard she'd been killed. The story's all over the news sites, so you can find an article on it quite easily. I listened to her songs on her Myspace and website, and they're really beautiful. She had the talent of the older generation's folk musicians like Joan Baez or Carole King. She left one album, though, and it is gorgeous. I couldn't find it on Amazon or iTunes, but it looks like it's possible to order the physical CD.

Flight of the Conchords, "Hurt Feelings"
Oh, Flight of the Conchords. I love you so much that I want to cry. I love you so much that I want to make funny, well-rhymed ditties that will impress you so much that you will love me too. Oh well. I'm sounding a little like Mel, and that's freaky. This song is from the most recent season of their show (and their upcoming album I Told You I Was Freaky). I still haven't seen all of the season because my mom tapes it for me (Hey--HBO is expensive!) and she only works with VCRs (21st century's a bitch) and our VCR broke. We bought a new VCR, though (yes, they still make them. Stop laughing) and I plan to figure out what I did with the tapes my mom gave me.
